Caregiver Support Service (OAA Title III-E)

Background and Project Introduction
According to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter "There are only four kinds of people in the world:
  • Those who have been caregivers
  • Those who currently are caregivers
  • Those who will be caregivers
  • Those who will need caregivers "
Family members are the primary caregiver for children and of long-term care to the elders. However, the task for caring for a child or an elder often results in a stress and isolating experience. Some family members thrive, some simply survive, and others suffer severe consequences. Many primary caregivers do not have a good support system to meet their needs. They feel alone, depressed, and imprisoned without any hope. The S.T.E.P.S. Caregiver Support Project is designed to change that by responding effectively to the unique support service needs of eligible family caregivers.

Program Goal & Services

The goal of the program is to assist caregivers in an effort to optimize care the elderly or children and to support aging in community. The project offers following funded and non-funded services:

Needs & Outcomes
S.T.E.P.S. in the Right Direction Inc estimates that about one-third of elderly homes in Miami-Dade County are more than 20 years old. As homes ages, the need for rehabilitation increases. In Miami-Dade County an estimated 24 percent of all elderly homes are in need of minor or major repairs. For many of the elderly, disabled and low-income caregiver households, our services fill a major void. Following is an unduplicated count of customers served by the program:

Working Together to Solve Problems

Experienced crew and volunteers often identify and address issues such as structural defects, plumbing, electrical systems, heating and cooling, roofing and access for people with disabilities. With major funding from the Alliance for Human Services of Miami-Dade County Alliance for Aging, Inc, private donors, along with the generosity from a pool of local contractors, we are able to assist hundreds of elders and caregivers with home repairs each year.
