  Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept Medicaid and Medicare?

We don’t work with either because of the amount of fraud that’s committed by organizations handling those programs. However, we do accept Medicaid waivers through the Alliance for Aging.
  Do you provide skill nursing?

We provide the kind of home care services that most nurses don’t provide. Our staff offers bathing; personal care; household cleaning; enhanced chores (i.e. cutting trees and yard work; and minor home repairs. The focus of our program is also to give caregivers some time off to rest and manage their personal affairs.

Do you provide low cost in-home care?

Yes. We provide low-cost, in-home care on an as needed basis. We keep our clients company, clean their beds and provide personal grooming and assistance.

What other services do you offer the elderly?

S.T.E.P.S. offers transportation services for individuals and groups. We charge a small fee to help maintain the cost of running the service. The fees are based on a sliding scale. Call S.T.E.P.S. for details.

  Who does S.T.E.P.S. help?

We help seniors, people with disabilities, caregivers; the disabled and people with special needs; families with children; and vulnerable groups such as immigrants seeking asylum.  Our work is focused on helping people who are unsure of where to go for help.

How do you determine who qualifies for assistance?

Federal and state guidelines determine who qualifies for S.T.E.P.S. assistance.  Who we help varies from programto program.

  Is S.T.E.P.S. a general contractor?

S.T.E.P.S. is licensed by the Florida Department of Professional Regulations as general contractor. S.T.E.P.S. is insured and bonded, and as such can handle home repair projects like building a wheelchair ramp or adding a railing to a bathroom shower or tub. S.T.E.P.S. is one of just a handful of groups in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties to offer construction services to low-income families and individuals in need. S.T.E.P.S. maintains a list of partner contractors and roofers who work with us. Please contact Michael Salem for details.

  Do you loan money?

Unfortunately, we don’t loan money. S.T.E.P.S. provides services, food and materials to families and individuals in need. Apart from our elderly outreach and assistance programs, we help families fill out applications for government assistance such as Florida KidCare Assistance, Medicaid, Food Stamps, Prescription Drug Assistance among others. We even help businesses create business and disaster mitigation plans. However, if you need a loan or require financial assistance, the S.T.E.P.S. staff can refer you to organizations that can help.

  Do you accept donations?
We accept cash and in-kind donations. A lot of our supporters donate goods. What we need are medical supplies, wheelchairs, walkers, appliances and more. Most of these donations are given to our elderly clients. Just as we accept these donations, we repair equipment like wheelchairs and power scooters.
What kind of volunteer opportunities do you have?

S.T.E.P.S. welcomes and encourages volunteers to help in our offices in Hialeah and throughout Monroe County and with our clients. Our volunteer opportunities include office work, and assistance with client outreach. Volunteers in the past have painted and cleaned homes, made deliveries to families in need, as well as assisted our clients with minor home repairs.

Where do you get your funding?

S.T.E.P.S. receives funding from federal, state and local governments, as well as from private foundations, The Children’s Trust and personal donations.

How do you apply for disaster assistance?

S.T.E.P.S. is one of a handful of local community groups that offers disaster assistance when it’s available. Please check the S.T.E.P.S. Website for updates on available disaster assistance.
